Bringing Back Culturally Significant Species

Many Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities have deep-rooted relationships with local wildlife. The moose, the bison, the great gray owls, and the other species that call American ecosystems home have all been living alongside Native communities for thousands of years. Through our work in long-term ecosystem stewardship, we hope to support a healing Planet that heals ecosystems and, thus, heals people.

Our Wildlife Relatives Are the Best Stewards

As wildlife populations surge, we see a continuous increase in overall ecosystem health. Humans are not the only stewards in native ecosystems; they are just one piece in a larger mosaic of species that care for the local environment.

Working with the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa in Northern Minnesota, new water management practices have increased fish and muskrat populations. This, in turn, has led to an increase in wild rice production on the local lakes. As this trend continues, and carbon-smart forestry is implemented, the Band estimates a >300% increase in moose populations.
